Our Story

The Algonquin Ski Race Team started in 2001, created by Wayne Hey.  Through the 24 years that it has been around,  many energetic and passionate racers have come and gone, each year learning more from the previous. The Algonquin Ski Race Team is more than a random assortment of people, but it is a supportive and fun community. We prioritize participation over placement, reinforcement over race time, and  self-growth over everything else.

Our Captains

Reilly Silvia

Reilly Silvia started his ski racing career back in 2019, at the age of 12. He was unable to find his rhythm in ski racing until he joined the Algonquin Ski Race Team, eventually leading him to being a States contender in the season of 2025. He has a history of working with kids, being a camp counselor for 4 years working with ages 5-8. As well, he has been a Junior Coach for the Ski Ward Race Team for two years, leading 10 to 11-year-olds to improving their ski abilities.

Cara Leonard

Cara Leonard started racing at Ski Ward Ski Resort when she was 13 years old. She joined the Algonquin Ski Race Team when she started 10th grade, and she immediately became a big influence for all other racers on the team. Her near-perfect ski form led her to the States championship race in 2025. Along with her skiing feats, Cara has been a camp counselor for the past four years, and plans to take these skills into junior coaching for the 2026 ski season.

Dylan Steele

Dylan Steele started his ski racing journey when he was 9. His improvement in this sport has been exponential, making big leaps in confidence and talent after joining the Algonquin Ski Race Team, leading him into alternate spot in the 2025 states championship race. He began teaching his younger sister how to ski, which developed into being a Junior Coach for the Ski Ward Race Team. He has done this for two years now, helping improve the talents of many kids around the ages of 13 and 14.
